Public Speaking

Minimum 5, Maximum 12

This course gives you a reliable skill base for preparing and delivering effective presentations. In every sphere of our interactions with others, whether it be in business, in school, or at our best friend’s wedding, we often find ourselves in the position of needing to “make a few, brief comments.” People tasked with such speeches might become flustered, not knowing what to talk about, exhibiting nerves, or rambling without making a point. To clearly communicate your ideas to others in an engaging way, whether your audience is one individual or thousands, is indeed a skill taught in this class that will require lifelong application and practice. This course is designed to help your ideas shine by learning the art of communication with varying audiences, your friends, members of your church, professional colleagues, professors, etc.  We’ll learn how to organize talks clearly, write them memorably, and deliver them confidently, how to read your audience and adjust your approach, and how to compensate for nerves. If you’re a beginner, this course will help you quickly master the fundamentals of speaking. If you’re a more seasoned speaker, this course will help you better understand public speech and push you to becoming an even better speaker than yesterday.

The cost for this course is $350/year with a $25 supply fee.

Textbook: Printed resources to be provided by instructor.

***Please note that our students will be presenting on a variety of topics that are predicated on research; they will need access to resources such as the library, the internet, or other such resources outside of the classroom.
