Science Classes

Biology (minimum 5, maximum 12)

Utilizing the text, Exploring Creation with Biology, 2nd Edition (Wile/Durnell), this class will cover the basics of Biology.  Topics covered include classification of living things, molecular biology, Mendelian genetics, ecology, and botany.  Mastery of vocabulary is encouraged.  Class time will be divided between discussion/lecture on Mondays and lab time that utilizes microscopes, dissections and experiments to solidify the concepts on Thursdays.  Formal lab reports will be required.  There is no prerequisite for this class.   Cost of the course is $350 for both semesters with a $50 supply fee.

Chemistry (minimum 5, maximum 16)

Utilizing the text, Discovering Design with Chemistry (Wile), this course will cover the following topics:  significant figures, units, molar calculations, stoichiometry, atomic structure, Lewis structures, molecular geometry, solubility, gas laws, acids and bases, redox reactions, and equilibrium.  The class will be divided between lecture and discussion on Mondays, and problem solving, and experiments designed to encourage the understanding of the concepts on Thursdays. Formal lab reports to will be required. Due to the level of math required, students should have previously completed Algebra I and Geometry.  In addition, prior completion of Biology is recommended.  Cost of the course is $350 for both semesters with a $50 supply fee.

Advanced Biology (minimum 5, maximum 12)

Using the text, Exploring Creation with Advanced Biology, 2nd Edition (Shannon/Yunis) as well as the Anatomy Coloring Book (Kaplan), we will begin with a brief review of biology, and then move on to the anatomy and physiology of each body system.  This course will prepare a student to take an Advance Placement (AP)  or College Level Examination Program (CLEP) exam.  Identification of structures via models and diagrams will be used during discussion and lecture on Mondays.  Cell histology (microscope) will be a part of Thursday lab time as well as Coloring Book exercises.  Formal Lab reports will be required.  Parents do not need to purchase the Coloring book as that will be provided.  Completion of Biology is required and Chemistry is recommended. Cost of the course is $350 for both semesters with a $50 supply fee.

Physics (minimum 5, maximum 12)

Using Jay Wile's Exploring Creation with Physics, 2nd Edition, this course will cover velocity, acceleration, one and two dimensional motion, potential and kinetic energy, torque, rotational motion, optics, electrostatic force, current and electricity, and magnets. Class time will be divided between discussion of concepts and problem solving on Mondays and experiments designed to solidify the laws/principles being taught on Thursdays.  Formal lab reports will be required.  Students should have completed Chemistry and Algebra II as prerequisites. Cost of the course is $350 for both semesters with a $50 supply fee.
